138,500 Germans studied abroad in 2012
The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this was an increase of 1.8% or 2,500 students on 2011.
In the past ten years, the number of Germans studying abroad has continuously increased. While the ratio of Germans studying at institutions of higher education at home to those studying abroad had been 1,000 to 34 in 2002, it was 1,000 to 62 (almost twice as many students) in 2012.
