New Method for Imaging of the Microstructure of the Lung
Microstructural changes in small airways are characteristic for lung disease such as chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD). Spirometry is the common diagnostic tool for assessment of global lung function, especially FEV1 (forced expiratory volume in one second). As parameters derived from spirometry are not sensitive to early changes in the small airways, a method for regionally assessing airway pathology on a micrometer scale would offer the possibility of early detection of lung disease and thus early therapeutical intervention.
