Compact engine consumes less fuel
With lightweight construction and the common-rail fuel injection system, a Lower Bavarian engine manufacturer succeeded in reducing the fuel consumption of its industrial diesel engines.
Combined with an exhaust gas recirculation system, the emission of nitrogen oxides is decreased significantly. The involved research activities are presented in the BINE-Projektinfo brochure “Durable diesel engine with electronic control” (06/2014).
The engine manufacturers Hatz developed the concept for diesel engines in machinery such as forklifts and lifting platforms. These applications require a particularly robust and durable engine. To meet the requirements, the engineers employed a type of electronic control not yet applied in this area.
The conventional control system for industrial diesel engines in the performance class of up to 56 kW is a mechanical one. The employed electronically controlled injection system is designed for a relatively high pressure of 1,800 bar.
At this high pressure, the fuel is distributed finely and homogeneously, allowing for a more efficient combustion. Combined with exhaust gas recirculation, this leads to fewer soot particles.
Consumption and emission can be further reduced with a compact design. The developers succeeded in reducing the weight of the engine by 90 kg compared with previous models. To do this, they lowered the number of individual components by one quarter.
