ESMT Competition Analysis listed to Top 20 global competition economic firms

This annual survey of the world's top competition economics practices uses such criteria as quality of economists and recent successes and lists the top 20 in no specific order. Despite the economic and financial crisis of 2009, ESMT CA substantially increased its customer base and was involved in many globally relevant cases, including important merger cases.

ESMT CA was active on such diverse issues as the Oracle/Sun Microsystems merger complaint before DG Competition and appearing as court experts in the German cement cartel case. Global Competition Review writes, “The firm has had its fair share of headline-grabbing cases in 2009.”

ESMT CA is the only German firm named in the global survey. “Despite the economic downturn, we were able to grow our business, in the area of M&As and beyond, due to our sustained reputation as research based consultancy with a strong European expertise,” said Hans W. Friederiszick, ESMT CA Managing Director.

The economists at ESMT CA work exclusively on competition-related cases, and this competency benefits ESMT as a whole, since European competition and regulation are a focus of the school's research. “ESMT faculty members and CA economists work together closely and bring complementary knowledge and approaches to complex projects in and out of the classroom,” said Lars-Hendrik Röller, ESMT President and former Chief Economist of the European Commission DG Competition.

“We saw an increase in private litigation this past year, a trend I believe will continue in the future given the advocacy by the EC Commission for stricter private enforcement at national level,” concluded ESMT CA Managing Director Rainer Nitsche. “With our U.S. partner Bates Whites, LLC, who were also listed this year, we are well positioned in this field and will continue to serve global clients on both sides of the Atlantic.”
