Radiocarbon Dating

Background
Radio carbon dating is a method for determining the age of organic material by measuring the ratio of the naturally occurring radioisotope carbon-14 and the isotope carbon-12 and/ or carbon-13. Carbon-14 is present in carbon dioxides (CO2).

Technology
An improved method for radiocarbon dating of organic substances by the precise determination of the ratio 14C/13C and/or the ratio 14C/12C or even the absolute quantity of the 14C isotope. The carbon isotope ratio is measured in a cavity after burning the sample. By means of infrared laser spectroscopy one can measure the intensity of the asymmetric stretching vibrations of the CO2 isotopes.

Benefits

Very accurate method

Significantly more accurate results than previous method

Suitable for forensic cases

IP Rights
German Patent DE102009045458
EP, US, AU Application

Patent Owner
Technische Universität Berlin
