Li-pillow – Textile space-compensator for Lithium-Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries with silicon-based anodes epxerience during the charge cycles strong volume changes of the electrode materials. Due to the resulting loss of mechanical and electrical contact between the active material and the electrical contacts, aging of the cells is enhanced. RWTH Aachen scientists of the ISEA and the ITA (Institut für Stromrichtertechnik, Institut für Textiltechnik) collectively found a solution for this problem.

Li-pillow describes a flexible and elastic matrix structure, which compensates for the volume changes of the electrode material during the charge and discharge processes, thus ensuring the integrity of the electrodes. Li-pillow consists of a synthetic three-dimensional spacer fabric, which is located within the battery cell at the current collector. Commercial Opportunities: Compared to conventional spacers in batteries, like simple two-dimensional technical textiles, Li-pillow offers significantly enhanced elasticity. Further, Li-pillow is capable of compensating larger volume changes and additionally provides improved ventilation for the battery cells. Lithium ion batteries are widely used as mobile energy storage. The use of Li-pillow increases significant the life of the batteries.
