RingoStar an AWG based WDM upgrade of Optical Ring Networks

The technology enables the evolutionary upgrading of existing single channel optical ring Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN) to wavelength division multiplexing (WDM)

networks without the need to apply WDM on the entire ring. The key is a hybrid optical ring-star network, which effectively uses existing dark-fibre capacity. With RingoStar only a subset of ring nodes is directly connected to the WDM network, resulting in fewer node interfaces and fibre requirements, but increased capacity compared to conventionally upgraded networks. The upgrading can proceed successively on a “pay as you grow” basis.
