Neuroglobin, Novel Vertebrate Globin

The present invention concerns a novel vertebrate globin, called neuroglobin (Ngb), that is exclusively expressed in neuronal and endocrine tissue, and is responsible for the transport and storage of oxygen in neuronal cells.

We provide the technology for the detection of Ngb-DNA and protein and the process for the manufacture of Ngb. The invention also concerns antibodies directed against Ngb and the use of the DNA and the protein for the diagnosis and/or treatment of diseases of the nervous or the endocrine system.
