Novel Monolithic Ceramic Elements Comprising Phases of Different Porosities and Pore Structures

A novel process was developed at the Karlsruher Institute of Technology (KIT) which allows the joining of two ceramic phases with disparate porosities and pore structures in a monolithic bloc. The process is based on a combination of freeze casting and slip casting. The pore size can be adjusted within a broad range in the freeze cast element as well as in the slip cast element. Thus the pore size difference between the two phases can be up to two orders of magnitude. Promising applications are likely in the field of step separation and in the field of cooling of electronic devices.
