Carbonsäuren

The invention in the field of biotechnology relates to a process for the preparation of functionalized di- or tri-carboxylic acids. The method is usually integrated in the production process for citric acid, which is used in food industry for preservatives and

acidulants, in cleaning agents as a detergent or in medical technology. The method is characterized by the use of microorganisms, which are used for chemical cleavage of the precursors. In particular, alkyl esters from commercial biodiesel fuels are added in order to cultivate the cultivation of micro organisms. This is done through Beta-oxidation of the mono carbonic acid under aerobic submerse conditions in a culture medium comprising optionally saturated, unbranched monocarbonic acid as assimilated main carbon source. The advantage of the process is the low waste production using biodiesel with high yields (50%) in a standard procedure. Biodiesel, which is produced as an alternative fuel, is a new inexpensive class of substrates for biosynthesis. In general, the use of alkyl esters as substrates is associated with significant procedural and technical and economic advantages compared to the current state of the art. The practice given by the present invention provides high yields and can be regarded as procedure with low waste products.
