Hertfordshire to award first Skin Camouflage Course Accreditations

The first accreditation for a Skin Camouflage course ever to be awarded by a university is soon be awarded by the University of Hertfordshire.

The course which started in April and ended last month attracted skin camouflage practitioners and individuals with skin disfigurements from all over the UK. Most of them were beauticians who wanted to gain formal qualifications in skin camouflage and to update their skills.

The course was developed by the University of Hertfordshire as a result of an approach from the Skin Camouflage Network which wanted the University to run it so that participants could be awarded academic qualifications for successful completion.

The course involved instructing participants on how to apply skin camouflage make-up to cover facial disfigurements or scars and allowed them to share good practice. The University of Hertfordshire was chosen to host it because of its knowledge of tissue viability and its familiarity with the counselling skins needed in such a sensitive field.

Madeleine Flanagan from the School of Continuing and Professional Development commented:

“We’re not just teaching people how to apply camouflage make-up, we’re also raising important psychological issues within a very delicate subject area and one which is often difficult for those affected to discuss openly. This work is providing insight into the specific needs of this client group and the skin camouflage practitioners who provide an invaluable and professional service”.

The next course will run in April 2006.
