EPS07 comes to the UK
Physicists across the North of England were rejoicing today at the news that they had been chosen to host a prestigious conference on Particle Physics in 2007.
The conference is run every two years by the European Physical Society, said Professor Roger Barlow, of Manchester University. Theyve just had their meeting at the CERN laboratory in Geneva. We persuaded them that our facilities and reputation, together with strong support from the many universities and research labs involved, gave us the edge. Were especially pleased to have done this for 2007, which should see the startup of the new LHC accelerator at CERN, and perhaps the discovery of the Higgs particle
This conference will bring hundreds of the worlds top scientists to the region, staying for a week at the former Commonwealth Games athletes village in Manchester. It shows how the vision of the North as an internationally recognised centre for Science, as outlined by Gordon Brown and John Prescott, is already becoming a reality.
