DuPont™ Selar® PA – a high barrier resin for mascara and nail polish packaging

Photo: DuPont
New and enhanced grades of DuPont Selar® PA are targeted for use as a high barrier resin for demanding solvent-based applications such as waterproof mascaras and nail polish containers, meeting industry demands for performance, aesthetics and sustainability.
Solvent-based waterproof mascara and nail polish require their containers to provide high barrier performance in terms of water vapor, aroma and solvents in order to minimize weight loss. Beyond this barrier requirement, Selar® PA can provide superior optics, a glossy and scratch resistant surface, excellent solvent and chemical resistance and excellent compatibility with decoration methods such as varnishing, printing and metallization.

Selar® PA 3426R, for use in nail polish containers, combines all of the above attributes with superior transparency to rival the clarity and chemical inertness of glass, without its weight and brittleness. Alternatively, new impact-modified Selar® PA 7003, designed for use in waterproof mascara tubes, provides increased drop impact resistance and enhanced processability versus incumbent materials. Its enhanced wall thickness distribution creates the potential for manufacturers to further reduce the wall thickness of their containers, thereby decreasing production costs. Such benefits have recently seen the new material gaining qualification for use in its mascara packaging by L’Oreal’s Expertise Packaging Center in France.
