Service Providers Slow to Adopt Solutions as Internet Exhausts IP Addresses

Robbert van Renesse, a professor of Computer Science at Cornell University, comments on why a solution hasn’t been implemented as the Internet runs out of IP addresses.

He says:

“Anticipating the shortage, the so-called Internet Engineering Task Force developed Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) in the nineties.

“Surprisingly, even though Internet providers can offer IPv6 service, in practice most do not. It is an interesting display of mass procrastination, where many are waiting to see what others are going to do before taking a step themselves.

“IPv6 is quickly becoming the only way out of this conundrum and I would expect to see widespread adoption in the next one or two years.”

Proteins must be folded correctly to fulfill their molecular functions in cells. Molecular assistants called chaperones help proteins exploit their inbuilt folding potential and reach the correct three-dimensional structure. Researchers at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry (MPIB) have demonstrated that actin, the most abundant protein in higher developed cells, does not have the inbuilt potential to fold and instead requires special assistance to fold into its active state.
