Piezo-Electric Hail Sensor: A New Era in Storm Detection

In recent years, we have been confronted with increasingly severe natural disasters, partially accompanied by damages into the millions. An important example are hail damages to solar cells. Recording and analysis of weather data has developed into an essential tool for better weather forecast and damage prevention.

While the registration of precipitation data is fully developed the acquisition of hail events is mostly done manually by counting impacts on so-called hailpads. A novel hail sensor was developed by Prof. Dr. Löffler-Mang at the University of Applied Sciences, Saarland. For the first time, this hail sensor offers the possibility to automatically record hail events and to simultaneously characterize every hailstone in terms of size and its damage potential.
