New Scandinavian collaboration boosts nanotech development

The nano centres of the universities in the Øresund Region — University of Copenhagen, Technical University of Denmark and Lund University — together with MC2 at Chalmers University of Technol-ogy and the Imgeo Institute in Gothenburg join forces to build up a network for co-operation within nanotechnology.

Nanotechnology — the growth industry of the future

Used efficiently, knowledge on nanotechnology will have an immense industrial impact. More than 50 billion SEK are invested globally in research and development each year, and the market for nanotech applications is expected to be about 1,000 billion USD at the year 2015.

Common strategic initiative

The partners will intensify the collaboration across Øresund/Kattegat by a common effort to create a network that boosts the development of nanotech research, education and commercialisation.

”This new collaboration will strengthen our competitiveness and really bring us to the top of the world. Having these strong participants joining forces, we will be able to use the enormous poten-tial of Scandinavia in terms of commercialising nanotechnology” says Daniel Kronmann, Project Manager of Nano Øresund, a partner working for enabling the collaboration.

South West Scandinavia — among the strongest clusters

In an international comparison, this consortium is one of the five strongest nanotech clusters in the EU and among the ten best in the world. This initiative will consolidate and improve South West Scandinavia’s position to be among the best in the world.

Nanotechnology and nanoscience is about studying and manipulating matter at atomic levels, and by that, be able to design required properties and special functionalities. There are many different areas of application for nanotechnology, within completely different industries; examples of innovations are lighter and stronger mate-rials, new medical aids, small electronics and enhanced environmental production.

Nano Øresund brings together and promotes the nano resources in the Øresund region. Nano Øresund is a part of Øresund Science Region.
