HHL Energy Conference on May 11/12, 2015: Students Discuss about Decentralized Energy

A total of 80 students from six different countries and 34 different programs from 25 top-level national and international universities will exchange views on current issues in the energy sector with representatives from the industry, politics and science during the event.

High-ranking corporate representatives from Roland Berger Strategy Consultants, E.ON, Siemens Management Consultants, Corporate Transformation Group, MIBRAG and EnviaM/MITGAS will talk about the latest trends in the energy sector. A case study competition which includes monetary prizes amounting to a total of EUR 4,000 takes place within the framework of the conference.

Notes for the press: Press interviews can be arranged prior to the Energy Conference and on the conference day. During the conference, we are offering interviews with the student teams and the corporate representatives. The organizers of the event will, of course, be available for questions as well.

Building on the success of the previous HHL Energy Conferences, this year's program includes once again various presentations given by experts as well as networking events in addition to a panel discussion. “We would like to give the HHL Energy Conference a more international flavor in the long run; therefore all the events on the program will be held in English this year. At the same time we will continue the well-established and successful concept of exchanging views between the fields of economy, research and politics,” says Gerrit Suhlmann, HHL student and head of the 5th annual HHL Energy Conference.

Part of the HHL Energy Conference: highly lucrative case study competition

The two-day conference aims to discuss the latest developments in the energy sector, show new perspectives and debate practical implications. A special focus is on possible solutions developed by the student teams in the course of the case study competition, which will be assessed by a high-caliber panel of judges. HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management offers ideal conditions for networking between the representatives from science, politics and the economy joining the conference and the students within the framework of the energy cluster of the Leipzig region

For the first time ever, international students have been invited to join the event as well. In doing so, the initiators of the HHL Energy Conference would like to promote networks amongst interested students. All discussions and presentations will therefore be held in English. The case study competition by Roland Berger Strategy Consultants to be contested by the students comes with a monetary prize of EUR 2,500 for the winner (EUR 1,000 for second place, EUR 500 for third place). The challenges of decentralized energy

The Internet is a prime example for the momentum of networking effects. The decentralized generation of knowledge and goods may be transferred to the energy sector as well. Photovoltaics, geothermal energy and a smart grid represent just a small part of the technologies allowing for a change toward the 'prosumer' and therefore decentralized energy generation. The implication of such a trend and its effects on the energy infrastructure are topics under discussion at the 2015 Energy Conference.

HHL Energy Club organizes the HHL Energy Conference

The HHL Energy Conference is organized by students who are currently completing an MBA or M.Sc. program and who are committed members of the HHL Energy Club. The activities of the student initiative include organizing the annual HHL Energy Conference, discussion rounds with industry experts and field trips to various companies and institutions in the energy sector.

The energy industry, also represented by a cluster of the City of Leipzig, offers numerous opportunities to start careers and establish businesses. Therefore, the founding of the HHL Energy Club also provides impetus for development in the region. This particularly applies with regard to Leipzig's desire to become one of Europe's prominent energy metropolises.

Supporters of the 5th annual HHL Energy Conference include Roland Berger Strategy Consultants, E.ON, Siemens Management Consultants, Corporate Transformation Group, MIBRAG, EnviaM/MITGAS, Deutsche Bahn, Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe, squeaker.net and SecretGravity.
