Speech technology: advantages of automatic transcription

04.02.2014
At the CCW trade fair in Berlin, EML European Media Laboratory will be presenting products which provide automatic transformation of incoming phone calls and voicemails into written text. – “EML Voicemail2Text Service” for VoIP systems and as Android App – data protection: speech technology “Made in Germany”

The Heidelberg-based IT enterprise EML European Media Laboratory GmbH will be represented at this year’s CCW trade fair (former CallCenterWorld) in Berlin from 18 February to 20 February 2014 with a stand of its own (Hall 4, Stand H13). EML offers speech technology solutions to enterprises for their customer contacts over the phone. At CCW, the speech technologists will be presenting two products:

The “EML Transcription Server” automatically transforms incoming phone calls into machine-searchable text and is speaker-independent. The “EML Speech Mining Server” classifies calls according to categories, patterns and conversational features. It scans the calls for new terms and links them with each other.

The automatic transcription allows an efficient, extended search for particular keywords. In conventional systems, every new keyword search involves reprocessing and rescanning all incoming calls that have been recorded. “Advanced Keyword Spotting finds the keywords in recognized texts as quickly as a search engine,” says Dr. Siegfried Kunzmann, EML’s head of R&D. “These keywords can also be interrelated. And the new phonetic search function means we can find keywords not yet registered in the speech recognition system, for example unusual proper names.”

Furthermore, contact center operators can adapt the speech recognition to their own application domains. “Speech recognition and domain adaptation capabilities will be available to enterprises on their own premises. This safeguards data protection,” states Dr. Kunzmann. “This is an advantage of speech technology made in Germany.”

At CCW, EML’s speech technology experts will also demonstrate a new service and the corresponding Android app for the automatic transcription of voicemails. With the EML Voicemail2Text Service, users of VoIP routers such as Fritz!Box, can receive an automatic transcription of incoming voicemails on their smartphones. 1&1 users can also access this service. The Android app is available free of charge in the Google Play Store.

Im Focus: First quantum photonic circuit with electrically driven light source

Optical quantum computers can revolutionize computer technology. A team of researchers led by scientists from Münster University and KIT now succeeded in putting a quantum optical experimental set-up onto a chip. In doing so, they have met one of the requirements for making it possible to use photonic circuits for optical quantum computers.

Optical quantum computers are what people are pinning their hopes on for tomorrow’s computer technology – whether for tap-proof data encryption, ultrafast...

Im Focus: OLED microdisplays in data glasses for improved human-machine interaction

The Fraunhofer Institute for Organic Electronics, Electron Beam and Plasma Technology FEP has been developing various applications for OLED microdisplays based on organic semiconductors. By integrating the capabilities of an image sensor directly into the microdisplay, eye movements can be recorded by the smart glasses and utilized for guidance and control functions, as one example. The new design will be debuted at Augmented World Expo Europe (AWE) in Berlin at Booth B25, October 18th – 19th.

Im Focus: Artificial Intelligence Helps in the Discovery of New Materials

With the help of artificial intelligence, chemists from the University of Basel in Switzerland have computed the characteristics of about two million crystals made up of four chemical elements. The researchers were able to identify 90 previously unknown thermodynamically stable crystals that can be regarded as new materials. They report on their findings in the scientific journal Physical Review Letters.

Im Focus: Complex hardmetal tools out of the 3D printer

For the first time, Fraunhofer IKTS shows additively manufactured hardmetal tools at WorldPM 2016 in Hamburg. Mechanical, chemical as well as a high heat resistance and extreme hardness are required from tools that are used in mechanical and automotive engineering or in plastics and building materials industry. Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems IKTS in Dresden managed the production of complex hardmetal tools via 3D printing in a quality that are in no way inferior to conventionally produced high-performance tools.

Fraunhofer IKTS counts decades of proven expertise in the development of hardmetals. To date, reliable cutting, drilling, pressing and stamping tools made of...
