Safety in tunnel systems

Every tunnel has its own, unique safety requirements depending on the location, design, height and level of traffic. Even seemingly insignificant events can rapidly escalate in tunnels. That’s why automatic alarm systems reliably identify and monitor objects and situations which may cause accidents or fires.

If safety regulations are violated, the video-based system triggers the alarm, e.g. in the event of traffic congestion, wrong-way drivers or lost cargo. As in all fire situations, rapidly localizing the source of the fire is a critical factor of success for efficient damage limitation.

Video smoke detection systems improve the risk analyses of tunnel operators and response forces, as they enable them to collect valuable information on the nature of the smoke and changes in the tunnel. Self-rescue is one of the outstanding priorities when accidents occur in tunnels.

Communication systems which enable immediate dispatch of emergency services and the announcement of escape instructions are therefore critical to reducing the risks for tunnel users.

Siemens is using the Hagerbach Test Gallery in Flums (Switzerland) for research purposes and for testing various fire scenarios and the effectiveness of fire protection measures in tunnel systems under realistic conditions (1:10 scale).

In tunnel applications, security and safety are inseparably intertwined. Given the limited escape routes in a tunnel, it is essential to detect a problem as early as possible.

Whether the aim is protection from potential attack, identification or disturbances in traffic flow, or detection of a fire, two central functions are always needed: detection and management.
