Experts from industry and academia discuss the future mobile telecommunications standard 5G

5G is seen as a key element for the upcoming digitilisation in all areas of life. It will have an effect on many other aspects of a networked society in the future, such as cyber-physical systems, the tactile Internet, the Internet of Things, networked automobiles (V2V) and Industry 4.0.

The conference programme therefore includes lectures and workshops on the Internet of Things, intelligent vehicles, mobile healthcare services and future user behaviour as well as a tutorial that provides an overview of 5G.

A particular focus of discussion will be new business models and applications that will be enabled through 5G. Participants and speakers at the conference include representatives from Samsung (Korea), Huawei (China), Nokia (Finland) and EnOcean (Germany).

“We are excited about this next conference of the WWRF and about the current status of 5G,” remarked Prof. Dr. Klaus David, head of the Department of Communication Technology (ComTec) at the University of Kassel and organiser of the conference.

“The high pace of digitilisation has a large influence on the value chain of vertical markets and industries including the areas of healthcare, transport, logistics, production and energy as well as intelligent cities, education and information in the public sector. This offers companies and the society at large many new business models and possibilities. A start with 5G should be possible already in 2020.”

In his recent speech on the state of the union, EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker called for EU-wide development of 5G mobile communication technology.

The WWRF is a forum that brings together academics and representatives of development and mobile technology companies. Twice a year it organises a worldwide conference, most recently in Silicone Valley and in Peking. The 37th conference of the WWRF will take place from 5 – 7 October 2016 at the University of Kassel location Wilhelmshöher Allee 71 – 73.
