15th conference of the International Association of Colloid and Interface Scientists

Colloid and interface science deals with very small structures in the nanometer and micrometer range. When this world of “hidden” dimensions is reached, it is often difficult to uncover structures and processes. Yet the complex architecture and dynamics of these structures determines the behavior of much larger systems.

Due to its complexity, colloid and interface science does not only present great challenges but also offer new opportunities.

“Functional nanoparticles are increasingly becoming part of our daily life, for instance as an additive in car tires. They contribute to a better adhesion, less wear and lower energy consumption, explains Prof. Dr. Hans-Jürgen Butt, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research and Chairman of the IACIS 2015. Other examples include nanoparticle-based therapies which are being developed in Mainz as part of a Collaborative Research Centre.

A deeper understanding of colloids and interfaces is essential in meeting the global challenges i.e. supporting medical research, providing energy, food and fresh water, preventing climate change and sustaining the environment. This conference aims to present recent results and discuss future prospects in colloid and interface science.

IACIS (http://www.iacis.nl/) was founded in 1979 to promote international cooperation among colloid and interface scientists. Every third year, IACIS stages the most important conference in this interdisciplinary field. This year it will take place in Mainz, Germany.
