FIZ Karlsruhe – Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure will be present in various respects at the 6th European Congress on Mathematics, held in Kraków from July 2-7. On the one hand, Mr. Olaf Teschke, head of FIZ Karls-ruhe’s mathematics and computer science department, will hold a lecture on how the European Digital Mathematics Library (EuDML) and the Zentralblatt MATH database (zbMATH) complement and enhance each other.
On the other hand, FIZ Karlsruhe will provide information on zbMATH at its booth. At this event, the Otto Neugebauer Prize will be awarded for the first time. It is named after the founder of the journal “Zentralblatt für Mathematik”, which is the precursor of zbMATH.
zbMATH is the world’s largest database for publications in the fields of pure and ap-plied mathematics. At present, it contains more than three million references to international mathematical publications from almost two centuries. Its features meet the highest standards. This makes zbMATH an indispensable tool for mathematicians at academic institutions and for everyone else dealing with mathematics at a professional level. FIZ Karlsruhe, the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, and the European Mathematical Society are the joint editors of zbMATH. The printed version of zbMATH is published by Springer Verlag.
The Otto Neugebauer Prize is endowed by Springer Verlag and awarded for research in the field of history of mathematics. The Austrian-American mathematician Otto Neugebauer (1899-1990) conducted groundbreaking studies on Babylonian, Egyptian, Indian, and Greek mathematics. In 1931, he founded the "Zentralblatt für Mathematik".
Gert-Martin Greuel, editor-in-chief of zbMATH and one of the speakers at the Kraków event, sees Neugebauer’s pioneering work continued: ”Neugebauer’s basic idea was to make mathematical findings from past eras to the latest results accessible and publicly available. The comprehensive content of zbMATH follows this principle in the 21st century.” Modern services such as the European Digital Mathematics Library established within the scope of the EU-sponsored EuDML project contribute to this objective: Together with 14 other European project partners, FIZ Karlsruhe develops the world’s largest digital library with more than 200,000 open access publications in mathematics.
The 6th European Congress of Mathematics is jointly organized by the European Math-ematical Society (EMS), the Polish Mathematical Society, and the Jagiellonian University of Kraków. This event, which takes place every four years at different locations, is the most important conference in mathematics apart from the “International Congress of Mathematicians“. The prizes awarded besides the Otto Neugebauer Prize include the EMS prizes, awarded to the ten best young researchers, and the Felix Klein Prize for the best solution to a problem from applied mathematics.

Novel highly efficient and brilliant gamma-ray source: Based on model calculations, physicists of the Max PIanck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg propose a novel method for an efficient high-brilliance gamma-ray source.
