IWES presents marine energy research highlights at the 4th International Conference on Ocean Energy

18.09.2012
Fraunhofer IWES will present their latest findings in the fields of wave prediction methods and measurement of dynamic effects in tidal currents (turbulences and waves). Furthermore highlights from the internationally recognized ORECCA project (international network for offshore renewables) as well as the MaRINET (European offshore wind and marine energy infrastructure project) and Kobold II (tidal turbine for the electric power supply of a village in Indonesia) projects will be issued.

Held every two years, the conference and exhibition International Conference on Ocean Energy (ICOE) is being hosted by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) in association with the European Ocean Energy Association (EUOEA) in Dublin this year after venues in Bremerhaven, Brest and Bilbao.

Over 100 speakers from 25 countries and over 750 international experts and world-leading companies in ocean energy are expected. There they will discuss how best to progress this emerging industry with representatives of the European Commission and other international politicians, i.a. Ireland’s Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources Pat Rabbitte TD and Canadian Minister of State Bernard Valcourt.

Fraunhofer IWES will be present with a joint stand together with British consulting company for renewable energy IT Power. Besides the information exchange at the stand, IWES researchers are going to hold oral and poster presentations regarding the research projects MaRINET (European offshore wind and marine energy infrastructure project), ORECCA (international network for offshore renewables) and Kobold II (tidal turbine for the electric power supply of a village in Indonesia) as well as wave prediction methods and measurement of dynamic effects in tidal currents (turbulences and waves).

The ICOE 2012 takes place from October 17th to 19th 2012 in the Convention Centre Dublin, Ireland.

Im Focus: Viaducts with wind turbines, the new renewable energy source

Wind turbines could be installed under some of the biggest bridges on the road network to produce electricity. So it is confirmed by calculations carried out by a European researchers team, that have taken a viaduct in the Canary Islands as a reference. This concept could be applied in heavily built-up territories or natural areas with new constructions limitations.

The Juncal Viaduct, in Gran Canaria, has served as a reference for Spanish and British researchers to verify that the wind blowing between the pillars on this...

Im Focus: Iron: A biological element?

Think of an object made of iron: An I-beam, a car frame, a nail. Now imagine that half of the iron in that object owes its existence to bacteria living two and a half billion years ago.
