Networking with Southeast Europe - SEE-ERA.NET Pilot Joint Call

15.02.2007
Fourteen European countries including all Western Balkan countries jointly published a call for proposals. This call aims at creating networks of researchers from the region of the Western Balkan countries, Southeast Europe and the European Union.

The main theme of the call is networking of scientists, who can only jointly apply for multilateral research projects, network projects or summer schools. Funding will be provided in the thematic areas "Environment", "Information and Communication Technologies", and "Food, Agriculture and Biotechnology".

Deadline: March 31, 2007

This call for proposals is a pilot case for the cooperation of the participating countries in the field of research funding. The design of the call is based on research on the priorities and needs of the Western Balkan countries with a view to their better integration into the European Research Area.

Participating countries are: Albania, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia and Slovenia.

This initiative is part of the Southeast European Era-Net (SEE-ERA.NET), a project financed by the European Commission. The main objective of this project is to explore and exploit synergies among bilateral Science & Technology agreements of the partner countries.

Im Focus: In best circles: First integrated circuit from self-assembled polymer

For the first time, a team of researchers at the Max-Planck Institute (MPI) for Polymer Research in Mainz, Germany, has succeeded in making an integrated circuit (IC) from just a monolayer of a semiconducting polymer via a bottom-up, self-assembly approach.

In the self-assembly process, the semiconducting polymer arranges itself into an ordered monolayer in a transistor. The transistors are binary switches used...

Im Focus: Hybrid optics bring color imaging using ultrathin metalenses into focus

For photographers and scientists, lenses are lifesavers. They reflect and refract light, making possible the imaging systems that drive discovery through the microscope and preserve history through cameras.

But today's glass-based lenses are bulky and resist miniaturization. Next-generation technologies, such as ultrathin cameras or tiny microscopes, require...

Im Focus: Stem cell divisions in the adult brain seen for the first time

Scientists from the University of Zurich have succeeded for the first time in tracking individual stem cells and their neuronal progeny over months within the intact adult brain. This study sheds light on how new neurons are produced throughout life.

The generation of new nerve cells was once thought to taper off at the end of embryonic development. However, recent research has shown that the adult brain...
