Innovative pH-Biosensor Enhances MRI and Spectroscopy Accuracy

pH-biosensors based on compounds with pH-sensitive enolic groups for magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy and their uses. Possible medical applications for pH imaging with this new pH sensor are extremely numerous since many pathologies cause changes in pH. Good examples are tumors, inflammation and ischemia. Furthermore, the application as a very precise pH sensor for in vitro NMR-spectroscopy is possible, e.g. for response-to-treatment monitoring of treatments applied to cell lines.

Enhancing Antibody Stability and Secretion for Biotech Success

With their broad field of application in basic research, diagnostics and therapy, antibodies represent one of the most important groups of proteins in biotechnology. However, due to their complex folding and assembly, industrial production of antibodies is costly. Consequently, improving antibody properties is of high commercial interest. The present technology here improves antibody´s biophysical properties by introducing two intra-molecular modifications in the antibody structure. This results in an significantlyenhancedstabilityandsecretion.

Short N terminus Split Inteins – Novel Split Inteins for protein semisynthesis and protein coupling

Protein trans-splicing catalyzed by split inteins is a powerful technique for Assembling a polypeptide backbone from two separate parts. As shown in the figure, the N and C terminal intein fragments associate and fold into the active domain thereby linking the
flanking sequences with a peptide bond. However, split inteins with robust efficiencies and short fragments suitable for Peptide synthesis are rare and have mostly been artificially created exhibiting poor to moderate coupling efficiencies only.

P-PHOS – Highly Efficient Triplet Emitter for OLED Applications

Scientists of the Westfaelische-Wilhems University Muenster and Sensient developed dopants for Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLED). The tri and bi-dental platinum (II) complexes with phosphite or dianionic NNC/NNN ligands are triplet emitters with excellent quantum efficiencies.

OLEDs consist of electro-luminescent substances, embedded in a polymer matrix. To emit exzitones, an electric current, triggered energy transfer is needed. Useful electroluminescent dopants are metal complexes like platinum complexes. The quantum efficiencies depend on the electronic behavior of the ligands used.
Therefore useful and efficient substances like P-Phos are required.

GBA2 – Therapeutic use of the non-lysosomal glucosylceramidase 2

Mutations in the lysosomal enzyme ß-glucosidase 1 (GBA1) cause Gaucher’s disease, the most common lysosomal lipid storage disease in humans. When GBA1 is absent or impaired, glycosylceramide (GlcCer) accumulates within the macrophage lysosomes, leading to liver and spleen enlargement, bone lesions and in the most severe cases, impairment of central
nervous system functions.

Innovative Method for Analyzing Cellulose Degradation in Biofuels

The constantly growing global population and the resulting increase in energy consumption, the foreseeable end of the global petroleum reserves and a need for stagnation or rather a decline of the emissions of greenhouse gas led to a closer focus on alternative energy sources. Especially the production of biofuel out of renewable, cellulosic raw material is constantly being optimized at the moment. One major challenge in this context is the generation of new, highly effective cellulolytic enzymes. Our novel assay, called hydrogel reagent signaling system (HyReS), offers significant advantages, as it enables a straightforward method for analyzing cellulolytic enzymes with a spatially-resolved imaging of cellulose hydrolysis in real-time using a simple fluorescent readout.

Efficient Method for High-Quality Exopolysaccharides Production

The present invention provides a novel method for the production of exopolysaccharides, in particular glucans and fructans. The special feature of method according to the invention is that the production of EPS is a non-recombinant technology, and that the purification of the produced EPS is furthermore possible simply by filtration, centrifugation, ion exchange or dialysis. The result is an enormous yield of high quality EPS in a highly purified form with uniform particle size, which can be used in several areas such as food industry, pharmaceutics, cosmetic industry, paper industry, polymer industry and chemical industry.

Tmem16f-deficient mice – A model for studying osteoporosis

During vertebrate skeletal development, osteoblasts produce a mineralized bone matrix by deposition of hydroxyapatite crystals in the extracellular matrix. Anoctamin6/Tmem16F (Ano6) belongs to a conserved family of transmembrane proteins. The gene Ano6 encodes a Ca-activated chloride channel. In addition, Ano6 has been linked to phosphatidylserine (PS) scrambling in the plasma membrane. During skeletogenesis, Ano6 mRNA is expressed in differentiating and mature osteoblasts.
Tmem16f-deficient mice were generated by complete gene deletion.

Vim3 Antibody – Use of Vimentin3 for the diagnosis and differentiation of benign and malignant renal carcinoma

Kidney cancer is classified as malignant tumors originating from different renal cells with several subtypes. The cells of these subtypes can mimic a benign kidney tumor, called oncocytoma. The unequivocal differentiation is essential for planning the
adequate operative procedure (tumor removal [oncocytoma] or complete kidney resection with lymph node preparation [malignant kidney cancer]) and potential follow up (not necessary in oncocytoma).

Electric Arc Innovation: Streamlining NEG Layer Production

NEG layers (non-evaporating getter) are able to remove the majority of gases from a high vacuum device at room temperature. In doing so, they also capture the gases released from the carrier material. After being activated, the NEG film is a clean metal surface which facilitates a high pumping speed and lower level of outgassing. Up to now, its usage has been limited due the time-consuming and complex method used for its production.
