Diving into Diazadiborines: New Materials for Molecular Electronics

Diazadiborines provide a new class of substances for molecular electronics. In addition to the application in the area of molecular electronics itself, i.e. as molecular electronic building blocks, diazadiborines may also ? analogously to other polycyclic aromatic compounds ? be used in the area of printable electronics, esp. as functional compounds in printing-pastes

Cost-Effective CVD Process for High-Quality Zinc Oxide Layers

At the University of Ulm, a cost-effective deposition process for zinc oxide (ZnO) layers has been developed that provides very good layer qualities and permits a high growth rate. Source material is zinc oxide, no elementary zinc is required.
Using this innovative CVD-based process, it is possible without the addition of environmentally-harmful additives, to create weakly-conductive layers, easily etchable sacrificial layers in multi-layer systems, conductive transparent layers (transparent conductive oxide, TCO) and generally conductive contacts or conductor structures on fixed-body substrates such as sapphire, silicon, silicon carbide or gallium nitride. Furthermore, this process is suitable for generating nano- or microstructures for sensor applications, thin-film transistors (TFT on displays), Schottky diodes, and field effect transistors.

Microarray Method Enhances Antiangiogenic Therapy in CRC

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most frequently occurring cancer in both sexes. It ranks second in developed countries. Tumor growth beyond the critical two to three millimeter diameter and metastasis require angiogenesis. Therefore, in later tumor stages, antiangiogenic treatment offers a strategy that has been shown in clinic to improve outcomes in patients with advanced or metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). Today, several antiangiogenic drugs for tumor therapeutic application have been approved, e.g. Bevacizumab (Avastin®), Cetuximab (Erbitux®) or Panitumumab (Vectibix®). Nevertheless, 20% of the patients do not respond and are resistant to antiangiogenic therapy.
This invention provides a method which allows to further improve the efficacy of antiangiogenic therapy in colorectal cancer (CRC). This is achieved by detection and exclusion of patients, which are in a therapy resistant tumor stage.

New Method Boosts Analytical Suspension Cell Line Production

Analytical cell-based assays used in diverse applications such as the risk assessment of chemicals and the investigation of stem cell propagation stages, currently employ adherent cell lines. This cell type comes with serious drawbacks. Most importantly, extensive measures are needed for propagation purposes. Intriguingly, scientists at RWTH Aachen University have invented a method of stably growing any analytical (reporter) cell line in suspension. This enables high cell density growth and bulk applications towards tissue engineering, as well as toxicity testing. Furthermore, the method profoundly enhances high-throughput screening efficiency.

Efficient Power Drive System for Hybrid Vehicles Unveiled

PD-HyVec has the task to integrate a small combustion engine efficiently into the drive train and to produce a real single wheel drive, at least for the front wheels. The PD-HyVec offers a cost-effective topology for the realization of a hybrid vehicle. Due to the continuous operation of the combustion engine in the optimum working point, PD-HyVec has a high efficiency. The concept allows the drive of only one axle, but also a real all-wheel drive, whereby all four wheels can be individually controlled. An implementation with more than two axes is also conceivable.
A German patent application has been filed

VNA-Wheel Sensor – Multifunctional rf-wheel-sensor

In today's passenger cars, a large number of sensors are installed which monitor the vehicle condition. For example, since 01.11.2014, all new cars have to be fitted with tire pressure sensors according to the EU regulation. The monitoring of the springs is another very important measuring parameter. This sensor electronics weighs about 40 g and is attached to the wheel housing. The so-called VNA wheel sensor can be used for the following contactless measurements: tire pressure, tire moisture, wheel speed, spring depth, suspension speed, steering angle and foreign body detection.
The VNA wheel sensor consists of a permissible transmitter for a broadband microwave signal (in the microwave range), a vector network analyzer (VNA) and an evaluation unit.
A German and an international patent application were filed, international applications are still possible.
In the name of the University of Applied Sciences Aachen, we offer interested companies the opportunity to license and further develop the technology.

Open FET Sensor – Extremely low leakage current Open-Gate Junction FET Electrometer

The Open FET sensor is a field-effect-based sensor in which the gate electrode is connected only to the signal to be measured and not as usual to other electronic components. It offers the possibility to measure small voltages at extremely high impedance. It is robust and versatile. For example, it can be used in scanning force and scanning tunneling microscopy or as an electrometer. Due to the simple construction, which does not require any further electronic circuitry, it is inexpensive and simple to manufacture. A German patent application was filed, international applications are still possible.
On behalf of the University of Duisburg-Essen, we offer interested companies the opportunity to license and further develop the technology.
