Novel cPLA2 Inhibitors Target Inflammation for Pharma Development

The invented substances have been characterized with regard to the inhibition of the cPLA2 (IC50 in the submicromolar range) and metabolic stability (tested in rat liver homogenates). The inventors are currently conducting such experiments with further, newly generated derivatives of the same inhibitor family. On behalf of the Westfalian Wilhelms-University of Muenster, PROvendis offers access to rights for commercial use as well as the opportunity for further co-development. The cPLA2 has been identified as target for the inhibition of inflammatory immune responses. The invented substances are of high interest for any pharma company with an immunological pipeline and may constitute the first-in-class cPLA2 inhibitors for systemic application.

Accurate Intraocular Pressure Measurement Device Unveiled

The present invention describes a measur-ing device that allows for the accurate de-termination of intraocular pressure by attaching a measuring body to the closed eyelid. The measuring principle is based on the subjective intraocular pressure es-timation by the palpating finger and will be implemented in an objective measuring method by the device described herein.
The existing development is based on an approximation of the contour of the in-dented eye which flattens the enveloping tissue and simultaneously adapts to the contour of the eye’s surface. In the broad-est sense it is as an adaptation of covering eyelid tissue to an expanded surface of the eye. The device basically consists of two pressure units made from silicone, which are independently and resiliently mounted from another. The pressure of the first membrane is applied via a struc-turally designed spring and serves to smooth the upper eyelid and the indirect fixation of the eyeball. The pressure of the second membrane is applied via two springs and is continuously increased to-wards measurement point when no further flattening of the second membrane is visi-ble. Consequently, the pressure character-istics of the eye are transferred from the first membrane to the second membrane. The flattening is monitored by an LED light reflex and the maximum value can thus be easily determined.
The present invention is of particular ad-vantage for measurements of intraocular pressure in patients with an injured or dis-eased cornea.

4D-PET- and SPECT-Phantom model compounds with anatomic realistic contours

The invention relates to a method which produces repeated and reproducible 4D-movements of a phantom model for measurements in PET, SPECT, CT and radio oncologic accelerators. According to the invention, the usable phantoms illustrate realistic tumor geometries with-out interfering glass and plastic partitions. With the help of the invention, PET-, SPECT- and CT-data can be evaluated. Additionally new algorithms of re-construction and the influence of ana-tomic movements on medical imaging can be tested for all of the three tech-niques. With the help of a kinematic con-catenation which consists of two rota-tional and one prismatic joint, the 3D-movements of the phantom models can be adapt on trajectories analog to the human respiration.

Surgical tool for bone resection

The invention provides a surgical tool, which generates a precise, pre-defined cut surface so that a good fit between the contact surfaces of the prosthesis and the bone is ensured.
The removal is affected by the use of a tool that has a vibrating unit and a holding part, which is important for directing to the bone.
There is an oscillating stroke movement along an axis parallel to the mounting direction of the joint prosthesis, as well as rotational movement about the same axis. The moving tool head has lying surfaces at an angle to one another, which are then adapted to the contact surfaces of joint prostheses. In order to produce defined-sectional areas, the holding part is fixed in the bone intramedullary, to ensure a guide of the surgical tool with fastening elements.

Innovative Ultrasonic Device Enhances Material Testing Accuracy

The invention relates to a constructive alteration of the ultrasonic transducers for an ultrasonic reflection and transmission measurement. The core of the invention is the placement of the transducers in a U-form with several ultrasonic transducers on the inside, which allow the measurement of irregular bodies and bodies with high ultrasonic dampening. Additionally the device uses constant flow of coupling agents by pumps. Several openings on the inside provide the testing body with a suitable agent with ensures the required coupling of the materials.

Non-Destructive Method for Measuring Material Properties

The present invention using the acoustically induced laser scattering (ALS) avoids these disadvantages by applying the principle of the acousto-optical modulation. By an appropriate arrangement of an ultraultrasonic source, a sonic grid which diffracts laser light is generated in the material. By exclusively using the diffraction peak of
the laser light in a test object, the invention enables new possibilities of non-invasive determination of relevant rheological and other mechanical properties. With this method, a non-destructive measurement of little technical effort and very short measuring times gets possible. Especially
it is, in contrast to conventional rheometers, suitable for in situ measurements. Thus, the invention has a big market potential in the fields of materials science, materials testing and quality assurance.

New Method Captures CO2 from Combustion Engine Exhaust

The invention delivers a solution, which is an energetically and ecologically better method, along with the required device for separating carbon dioxide from the exhaust fumes of combustion engines, based on thermodynamic arrangements. To do so, the gas mass, which is fed to and exhausted from the engine is conditioned in such a way that it is possible to lower the exhaust conditions enough for 〖CO〗_2 condensation. The conditioning is done in regards to temperature and pressure. Doing so causes the carbon dioxide to change its aggregate state to liquid, which makes separation and storing of 〖CO〗_2 possible. The energy for this process is taken out of the engine exhaust and from the engine power. The energy exchange is done with heat exchangers. An additional medium is used as heat storage, while the enthalpy of this medium can be used for recovery processes.

Automatic Calibration Method for Cochlear Implants

It is known, that the electric stimulation of the Stapedius muscle by the brain is not following a 0-1 scheme. Rather, it is following in a continuous curve which correlates with the signal intensity. Because of this, the invention aims to deliver a method for continuously (re-) calibrating every amplification factor.
The invention solves this task by using an integrated control system. This system compares the outer microphone volume with a target curve, which causes the Stapedius muscle to behave in a certain way. If the measured muscle behavior is different from the expected one, this system changes the amplifying parameters.
By observing and storing the Stapedius activity it is possible to make the amplification factors dependent on the volume, which makes a nonlinear amplification possible.

Tactile Displays Made Easy with Large-Area Polymer Membranes

A simple, feasible method for the production of laminate composites, consisting of a perforated substrate and a polymer membrane, now allows for the production of tactile displays the size of a computer screen. The procedure developed at Furtwangen University now enables the coating of large substrates with a high-quality membrane film, without creating air bubbles at the bond interface. The new method is environmentally-friendly, as the carrier is reusable and no chemicals are required to reduce adhesion. The procedure can be integrated into commercially available lamination systems.

Detect Co-Occurring Histone Modifications in One Step

Due to the role of epigenetics in a vast array of diseases, the study of epigenetic mechanisms has become one of the most rapidly growing fields of biology.
Amongst others, epigenetic alterations involve post-transcriptional histone modifications (PTMs). Occurring in complex patterns, they form the so-called ‘histone code’. In order to decipher said code and unravel its involvement in disease, the characterization of co-occurring histone modifications is considered to be an important cornerstone.
An innovative method now allows the detection of co-occurring histone modifications in one single step. Contrary to conventional methods, the technique offers much improved sensitivity, is easy to perform and features consistent quality.
