Boosting Dynamic Range in Multi-Sender Beamforming Systems

Digital beam forming systems simultaneously improve resolution and dynamic range. Usually the dynamic range of a system suffers, when there is only a limited number of senders and receivers. The present invention offers a process to increase the dynamic range of multi-sender multi-receiver systems which have only a small number of elements in the group. The system provides increased dynamic response even with a small number of antennae. The number of elements in a group of senders and receivers can be reduced, which in turn lowers the hardware costs.

Exhaust Tract for Combustion Engines –Turbocharger

The novel MEDUSA technology for turbocharging combustion engines fits the current trend to downsize engines perfectly. The optimal inflow into the turbine, particularly at low speeds of revolution, makes the engine very responsive, with maximum torque developing in the lower range of rotatory speed. Additionally the exhaust tract that forms part of the invention is extremely robust, in particular at high combustion temperatures. Thus the technology is particularly suited for use in small gasoline engines: the efficiency is greater than for wastegate turbochargers; however, unlike the Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG) turbocharger, this charger does not require adjustable guide vanes.

Scientists at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts developed a 2in1 plasma device for combined surface preparation with cold-plasma and electromagnetic radiation (e.g. UV or IR).

Protein kinase MST 1 – the key to a new diabetes therapy

Researchers of molecular diabetology at the University of Bremen have now identified a key protein, protein kinase MST-1, which is responsible for the death of these insulin-producing cells due to apoptosis (programmed cell death) and thus for the formation of the diabetes disease. This is valid for both forms of diabetes, namely the autoimmune type 1 and type 2, which depends on age and obesity. More than 7 million people are affected by this disease in Germany.
The scientists are carrying out intensive research on the involvement of the protein kinase MST-1 in the apoptopic processes in the beta cells.
In laboratory models, it was possible to demonstrate that the targeted inhibition of MST-1 was able to maintain the secretion of insulin and prevent the disease from progressing. Assays have been developed which can be used by means of in vivo and in vitro tests to show which MST1 inhibitors can prevent diabetes.
A worldwide patent is applied for this new approach. Companies are addressed which may are interested in a license or cooperation with the university of Bremen.

Der steigende Energiebedarf unserer Gesellschaft erfordert eine hohe, störungsfreie
Auslastung von Anlagen zur Energieerzeugung. Falls an einem Rotorblatt ein Schaden auftritt, wird die Auslastung der Anlage erheblich reduziert. Die Rotorblätter von Windkraftanlagen können aufgrund der Bauhöhe der Anlagen derzeit nur mit speziellen mobilen Arbeitsbühnen und Hubsteigern gewartet werden. Einfache Wartungsinspektionen werden von Fachleuten übernommen, die sich am Flügel abseilen. Aufwendige Reparaturen und Diagnosen können oft nicht durchgeführt werden und erfordern eine kostenintensive Demontage der Flügel. Die periodisch geforderte Inspektion von Rotorblättern oder von Windkrafttürmen nach DIN EN 61400-23 (VDE 0127-23) verlangt aber eine lückenlose vor-Ort-Untersuchung des Rotors auf weitere Schäden, die möglicherweise produktionsbedingt oder durch dynamische Belastung und häufig durch Transport und Betriebsvibration auftreten können.

Recombinant Prion Protein: Enhancing High-Throughput Diagnosis

Due not least to the BSE-crisis in Great Britian and the new variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) a great need for a reliable diagnostic method of prion proteins exists, especially for the discrimination of prion cases from other neurodegenerative diseases. The present invention provides a method for the purification of recombinant prion proteins (rPrP), which are suitable to be used in the currently accepted detection method (Real-time quaking induced conversion, RT-QuIC) and lead to faster, more specific and overall more reliable results. Therefore, a “ready-to use protein” is provided for the detection of prion protein in blood, brain and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).

Reib-Drücken – Reib-Drücken von Hohl-Profilen

Durch die spezielle thermomechanische Prozessführung wird eine gezielte Einstellung der Gefügeeigenschaften (z.B. Härte, Festigkeit) und die Herstellung von Geometrien möglich die bisher umformtechnisch nicht herstellbar sind. Daher hat das Verfahren das Potential für die Realisierung einer flexiblen und kostengünstigen Fertigung auch kleiner Serien, da nur ein geringer teilespezifischer Werkzeugaufwand erforderlich ist. Durch den Einsatz universeller Umformwerkzeuge bei dem neuen Verfahren entfallen auch bei kleinen Losgrößen und Prototypen teure Spezialwerkzeuge. Die Erfindung konnte in Vorversuchen ihre Funktionsfähigkeit beweisen und ist beim Deutschen Patent- und Markenamt zum Patent angemeldet. Erste Testergebnisse und Musterbauteile liegen vor.

Fahrwerkoptimierung – Entwicklungswerkzeug zur Fahrwerkabstimmung der Vertikaldynamik von Fahrzeugen

Zur Fahrwerkabstimmung gehört die werksseitige konstruktive Abstimmung der Fahrwerkskomponenten auf den Einsatzzweck eines Fahrzeuges. Aufgrund der komplexen Korrelation zwischen Subjektiv- und Objektivbewertung des vertikaldynamischen Fahrwerkverhaltens im Fahrversuch, ist die Simulation der Abstimmung der Komponenten im Rechner begrenzt. Daher sind im Entwicklungsprozess eines Fahrzeugs umfangreiche Testfahrten zur Bewertung des Fahrverhaltens notwendig. Nur so kann das Fahrwerk und dessen Komponenten hinsichtlich der Zielkriterien Fahrkomfort und Fahrzeugsicherheit optimal eingestellt werden. Zur Abbildung aller Fahrzeugparametervarianten in den Testreihen werden zahlreiche kostenintensive Prototypen von Fahrwerken gefertigt und getestet.
Das aktive Federbein zur Fahrwerkoptimierung ermöglicht die Einstellung verschiedener Kennlinien des Stabilisators einer Achse, der Feder und des Schwingungsdämpfers eines Federbeins.

organo.MAG – Multiaxialgelege in Organoblechen

Die Erfindung erweitert deutlich die Einsatzgebiete für Multiaxialgelege. Exemplarisch sind die Verwendung von Multiaxialgelegen in endlosfaser-verstärkten Thermoplastbauteilen sowie das Entschlichten und Beschlichten mit einer auf die Faser-Matrix-Haftung ausgerichteten Schlichte zu nennen. Die eingesetzte Produktionsweise eröffnet ein breites Anwendungspotenzial für die Automobil-, Luft- und Raumfahrtindustrie bis hin zur Sportartikelindustrie.
Eine Patentanmeldung wurde beim Deutschen Patent- und Markenamt hinterlegt. Die Vorteilhaftigkeit des Verfahrens konnte in ersten Versuchen nachgewiesen werden.

Intelligent Battery System: Modular Energy Storage Innovation

The current invention provides a battery system comprising several modular and similarly constructed submodules. Each submodule contains exactly one energy storage device and a switch system. The switches “intelligently” connect the energy storage devices in series or in parallel, or take them out of the circuit. Rather than compensating for the heterogeneity of the energy storage devices by “load balancing”, the battery is maintained in its heterogeneous state and said state is only considered during loading / unloading by said “intelligent” interconnections (“intelligent balancing”).

Der Toruslenker eignet sich als Führungs-, Übertragungs-und Positionierungsgetriebe. Eine mögliche Anwendung als Führungsgetriebe ist die räumliche Ausrichtung eines Flugsimulators. Beim Einsatz als Positioniergetriebe wird das auszurichtende Objekt fest mit einem der umlaufenden Räder verbunden und kann so gezielt im Raum gekippt und gegiert werden. Eine mögliche Anwendung als Positionier-Getriebe ist die Ausrichtung von z.B. Satellitenantennen oder Solarzellen gesehen.
Die Erfindung wurde von der Fachhochschule Dortmund durch eine internationale Patentanmeldung geschützt.

Innovative Method Boosts Expansion of CD4+ T Cells In Vitro

Current established protocols for the in vitro expansion of T cells face several problems like induction of apoptosis by stimulation of the T cell receptor complex (TCR), expansion of only subpopulations of CD4+ T cells or unwanted release of pro-inflammatory cytokines. The present method for expansion of T cells in vitro leads to a remarkable expansion of those T cells in complete absence of anti-CD3 antibodies and superagonistic anti-CD28 monoclonal antibodies. Hereby, the engagement of TCR is avoided and an unbiased expansion of T cell, in particular CD4+ T cell, subsets is achieved. The unbiased expansion of CD4+ T cells is reflected by maintained responsiveness of the expanded CD4+ T cells towards polyclonal stimuli and antigenic recall antigens in comparison to non-expanded CD4+ T cells.

Delta-Sensor – A novel corrosion analyser for wireless corrosion mapping of reinforced concrete structures

Corrosion of steel in concrete is a global problem, leading to billions of dollar in repair and maintenance cost. A reliable diagnosis of the condition of a reinforced concrete structure is the basis for an effective life cycle management.
Potential mapping allows a location of areas with a high risk of chloride induced corrosion of steel in concrete. Typically, a half cell potential is measured with a high resistive voltmeter between an external reference electrode and the reinforcement. However, this method requires the local destruction of the concrete cover to establish a galvanic contact between steel bars and the reference electrode. In some cases older structures cannot be analysed reliably due to the discontinuity of the reinforcement.
The novel Delta-Sensor Concrete Corrosion Analyser overcomes these disadvantages by measuring without a reinforcement connection through a direct measurement of the surface potentials between three CuSO4 half cells and the determination of the field gradient in the vicinity of depassivated reinforcement areas. The results are plotted in a corrosion map, showing precisely the position of critical areas in the concrete structure.

Innovative Silver-Free Solar Cell Metallization Process

The newly developed process combines the LIFT (Laser Induced Forward Transfer) process and screen printing to produce the front contacts of solar cells.
The combination allows the minimization of contact and line resistances even in industrial scale production and is associated with substantially reduced costs of materials. In particular, silver is being replaced with nickel or copper.
In addition to saving costs by not using silver the process optimizes the contact and line resistance which increases the solar cell’s efficiency.
The German patent has been granted.
