Thermally Insulated Micro-CT Holder Enhances Sample Integrity

In the analysis of biological samples, specimens are often investigated with methods in sequential order. In order to make this possible, the adequate preservation of samples is an essential prerequisite. A commonly used procedure is in this case the cooling of samples to -20° C to -80° C by freezing.
Disadvantageous is however so far that, due to insufficient thermal insulation sample temperatures gradually approximate the ambient temperature within the respective device. The sample to be investigated consequently thaws, which negatively influences the quality of downstream investigation procedures or even causes a destruction of the structural integrity of the specimen.
The invention solves this problem by the use of a hollow cylinder which consists of thermally insulating, X-ray translucent material as insulating body.
