Innovative Method for Producing Self-Assembling Monolayers
Self-assembling monolayers (SAMs) allow for the targeted modification of surface areas. Previously known methods for the production of SAMs are carried out with solutions ? often with the help of a stamp ? and do not make use of a protective gas, which may lead to impurities of the surface. Furthermore, the methods known so far require a time of deposition of up to several days.<p>
In contrast, the invention at hand provides a method for depositing SAMs within a permanent, oxygen-free protective gas flow in high vacuum. Thus, SAMs that are essentially free from impurities are formed within a few minutes. The bonding of the SAMs to the solid surfaces is caused by adhesion.
