Heterocyclic Compounds Target Neurodegenerative Diseases

Novel, non-peptidic active agents based on aminopyrazoles imitate and bind abnormal b-sheet structures of peptides and proteins characteristic of Alzheimer?s diseases and TSE diseases. TSE diseases are transmissible spongiform encephalopathies.<p>

The novel active agents feature a rigid structure and a characteristic donor-acceptor-donor motive that recognizes abnormal b-sheet structures of peptides and proteins as in the lock-key-principle. For this reason, the formation and aggregation of the b-amyloid plaques, which pervade the patients? cortex and cause the dying off of neurons and a gradual loss of brain function, is inhibited.
