Innovative Silane Derivatives Cut Formaldehyde in Wood Composites

Scientists at the Univiversity of Göttingen, Germany, developed a New Procedure for the Reduction of the Formaldehyd Release in Wood Composites, based on the use of organo-silane derivatives, particularly aminosilane derivatives. The Göttinger innovation is a solution to the adoption of more severe norms and permittet limits of emission of formaldehyd for wood composites. The global market for particle boards is estimated to be aprox. 75 Mio. qm for 2011.

The novel Procedure is based on the pre-treatment of the wood chips with organo-silane compounds in a two-step procedure: 1. Step: Pre-treatment of wood chips with silane compound, drying. 2. Step: Usual binding application and particle board production. A reduction of more than 50% of the emission of formaldehyd could be achieved. We are now looking for companies, which are interested in licensing, developing and commercializing our approach.
