Microbial PHB Production: Sustainable Innovations Unveiled
The invention relates to the microbial synthesis of polyhydroxy
alcanoic acids (PHB) from substrates which are potentially ecotoxic. The inventive method for the continuous production of PHB is characterised in that strains of micro-organisms which are known to form PHB are bred chemostatically with maximum heat production on substrates which present growth inhibition with a substrate surplus. The advantages are, compared to other methods, that the invention represents a relatively cost-efficient way of microbial synthesis of polyhydroxyalcanoic acids. Waste products from chemical industries and agricultulture may be used for synthesis of PHB (utilizing phenol or benzoate as alternative carbon-sources). Thus, enabling simultaneous synthesis of useful materials as well as disposal of hazardous substances. The maximum heat produced is adjusted according to a maximum proportion of PHB contained in the biomass.
