Metformin prevents the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) of mitochondrial complex I. Consequently the expression of CD95 (Fas) ligand is blocked leading to the inhibition of activation-induced T-cell death (AICD). Thus undesirable T-cell death can be inhibited by metformin. Therefore metformin can be used for the treatment of T-cell mediated inflammatory diseases like multiple sclerosis and graft-versus-host disease.
