Intra-heart – Continuous evaluation of ventricle function in bypass state

Patients being connected to an artificial auxiliary heart sometimes show recovery of heart function. Monitoring of the cardiac function is therefore needed in order to evaluate its variation. Conventional methods require the use of an expensive ultrasonic device or the insertion of a conductance catheter into the patient’s left ventricle. The present invention discloses a method to continuously monitor the function of a ventricle, to which an auxiliary heart is connected. Such method is non-invasive and therefore avoids risk factors such as causing infections or a thrombus. Ventricle function is calculated based on the correlation between intra-ventricular pressure measured by a pressure sensor and consumption power of the artificial

heart. Such artificial heart may include a diagonal flow pump, a centrifugal pump or an axial flow pump. The disclosed method allows the distinction of full versus partial bypass state, in which the heart function recovers and the aortic valve is opened.
