DyeXtension – Extension of the Service Life of Laser Dyes

Dye lasers can be tuned over a large spectral range. As a

result, they have a clear advantage over lasers with only one or a couple of fixed wavelengths. Dye lasers have already been in use for over 40 years. However, the fluorescent dyes used still only have a limited service life under the influence of light and have to be replaced after a short period. The most frequently used laser dye, Rhodamin 6G, for example, is unusable at most after two weeks of constant operation in a dye laser. This poor light stability is the most significant limitation to the everyday capability of dye lasers. Therefore, attempts have been made over many years to stabilise dye solutions, but until now only with moderate success. A team of chemists and physicists from the University of Cologne and Ruhr University of Bochum has now made a breakthrough with DyeXtension.
