The invention provides a method for generating realistic 3D-volume models from lower dimensional measurement data, e.g. obtained from a single 2D recording, such as an X-ray picture. This is achieved by employing a statistical volume model of the human body. Both the surface and inner structures are part of this model. The invention, therefore, is a powerful tool for efficiently evaluating measurement data from 2D imaging methods.
