Boosting Efficiency at Profertil’s Bahia Blanca Fertilizer Plant

Most of this increase in efficiency is made possible by a highly efficient model STC-GV (80-6) compressor, an SGT-600 industrial gas turbine, a 13-megawatt (MW) generator, and a NEM heat recovery steam generator.

The HRSG secures optimal steam generation for chemicals production from the gas turbine's exhaust heat. Profertil uses the generated electricity directly for chemicals production, reducing the power purchased.

After successful commissioning in May 2015, this type of solution provides Siemens with its first reference plant for ammonia/urea production facilities which operate on the basis of the developed Haldor Topsoe process for ammonia production.

At the same time this represents worldwide the first reference plant with this kind of solution. The used production process enables gas turbines to be used as an alternative to steam turbines for driving air compressors. A number of new ammonia plants are currently being planned which will employ this same process.

“We have supplied our customer with an innovative end-to-end solution, instead of conventional single-shaft compressor solution. Using the same amount of natural gas he can now produce considerably more fertilizer while generating electricity at the same time”, explained Younes El kitmani, Regional Sales Manager Southwest Europe & Africa at PG CP.
