Scientists at the University of Regensburg in Germany) have created atomically resolved images of a salt crystal that was prepared in ambient conditions by cleaving.
Until recently, samples had to be prepared in complex vacuum chambers or in controlled liquid environments to allow for atomically resolved imaging.
Daniel Wastl and colleagues report their breakthrough in the US science journal “Physical Review B”, 87 245415 (2013).
