ScanBalt Academy House Opens: Boosting Innovation in Schwerin

The settlement of the ScanBalt Academy in Schwerin, graciously donated by Landesregierung of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will have positive impact for the region and play a significant role within the regional and global scientific community. Hans-Robert Metelmann, the Chairman of ScanBalt says: ”The ScanBalt Academy will monitor or start initiatives linking science to business. Forcing investments as a result will create new jobs and increased competitiveness. An aim is to attract resource to the Baltic Sea region, like internationally trained young scientists.”

On the agenda was discussion of a ScanBalt Center of Excellence in Cancer Prevention in line with the FP7 Capacities Work Programme of the European Union. The Ministerpresident of Mecklenburg- Vorpommern, Dr. Harald Ringstorff, kindly agreed to take political leadership in this proposal. As a gesture of commitment to ScanBalt Academy the Ministerpresident also patronized the conference.

Participation of many politicians, among others Minister of Health Erwin Sellering and Minister of Finance Sigrid Keler, was a very positive sign that politicians and prominent scientists are coming together and are discussing the connection and interplay between them. The Landersregierung Mecklenburg-Vorpommern kindly provided a financial grant to support the work of ScanBalt Academy.
