Enzymatic Bio-Coating: Precision Surface Solutions for Medicine

Biological coatings have a high potential for manifold applications, especially for medical applications or biodegradable coatings. Up to now, the formation of biological coatings is accompanied either by a low control over film formation or connected to high costs. Current challenges that need to be overcome are a high control over the film thickness, an even and continuous coating of objects with a complex geometry, or the site-specific coating of single areas on one object. The new concept Enzymatic Bio-Coating is able to solve these Problems. Suitable supports are: Glass, wood, and miscellaneous plastics and metals.
Casein layers are antibacterial, edible, and renewable.

Anti CD30 CAR – Anti CD30 chimeric antigen receptor selectively targets tumor cells

The invention describes a CAR which recognizes CD30 as a target antigen and initiates lysis of CD30-positive (CD30+) tumor cells but not of CD30+ healthy cells like hematopoietic stem cells. Specific genetic modifications of the anti-CD30 CAR ensure the specific targeting of CD30+ tumor cells and prevent unwanted side-effects. This approach has been tested in vitro with CD30+ hematopoietic stem cells and CD30+ tumor cells and in vivo in mice transplanted with human CD30+ hematopoietic stem cells. In vivo experiments provided evidence that the treatment with anti-CD30 T-cells has no unwanted impact on the endogenous immune system. Thus, the CAR is most suitable for clinical application in targeting CD30+ leukemia and lymphoma cells. A clinical study phase I is planned for early 2016, indication: cutaneous T-cell lymphoma.

Improved CAR T-cells – Bispecific chimeric antigen receptors with a CD30 binding domain

Adoptive T-cell therapy is a very promising approach in the treatment of cancer. Early phase clinical trials with genetically engineered T-cells expressing a tumor-specific chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) show significant efficacy in the treatment. However, currently used CAR modified T-cells for antigen-directed targeting towards tumor cells have insufficient performance in the anti-tumor attack, e. g. less amplification and cytolytic activity after the transfer of the modified T-cells into the patient. Scientists from the University Medical Center of Cologne developed a bispecific CAR, which improves the performance of genetically engineered T-cells expressing these CAR polypeptides on their surface. The bispecific CAR comprises two antibody units, with one antibody unit being an anti-CD30 single chain antibody unit and the other antibody unit being an antibody unit specific for an antigen present on the surface of a predetermined target cell, e. g. for the tumor carcino-embryonic antigen (CEA) on breast cancer cells.

Plasma Roller Device Boosts Efficiency for Flexible Materials

Surface activation or cleaning by cold plasma is getting more and more attention. Current plasma-based solutions for flexible materials however lack efficiency or are technically too complex and error-prone. Scientists at the HAWK developed a plasma roller device for effective and fast plasma treatment of flexible materials.

Stable copper-based oxidation catalysts to obtain e.g. phenol as precursor for synthetics or to produce oxygen detectors

The new copper-oxygen adduct complexes for the first time are thermally stable at room temperature (and above) as well as in oxygen-containing atmosphere, i.e. stable as a solid and are suitable for being used as oxidation catalysts, especially in in-dustrial chemistry, e.g. for the oxidation of benzene to phenol or of methane to methanol, for the oxidation of hydrogen, aromatic and aliphatic, saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons as well as alcohols and amines.

Innovative Divergent Nozzle Design for Enhanced Flow Efficiency

A novel divergent nozzle design, which provides for a homogeneous flow profile even at long distances from the nozzle exit, was developed at the University of Stuttgart. The flow profile is optimized by a central body, shaped and placed in the flow channel in such a manner as to achieve a uniform flow and temperature distribution at the target object. Based on these characteristics, the invention is particularly suited to be used as a long range nozzle for large penetration distances in drying and ventilation applications.

Innovative Positioning Device for CF Flange Gaskets

CF flanges are well-established components for building ultra-high-vacuum environments. There are several geometries of the tubes that follow the ISO/TS 3669-2 standard, so that the costumer can combine products from different companies.
Nevertheless, a rather tricky task remains: For sealing the contact points between two different CF flanges, the technician has to mount a thin gasket between the two outer ends of the flanges before tightening the bolts. The gasket is typically made of high purity copper. When tightening the bolts, the extruded metal leads to a leak-tight seal (see Figure 1). Mounting and positioning of the copper seal still remains manual work – the technician has to fix the ring in the right position until the bolts hold the two flanges in place. Even if the technician is well trained, the gasket is likely to move and drop out when handling heavy components (pumps, evaporation devices, sections of the vacuum system, etc.). This is a waste of time and money – the damaged copper gasket can’t be reused.
Our new positioning device eliminates the need for this tedious and rather complicated positioning of the sealing ring by hand.

StentEx – Surgical instrument for removal of vascular stents

The present invention provides a stent remover for open surgery which can be used to safely remove a stent without causing tissue damage. In a first step, at least three wires are threaded through the mesh of one end of the stent. Then, all wire ends are fed through a sleeve and fixed with a crimping device. Afterwards, the wires in the sleeve can easily be introduced into the funnel-shaped tube of the stent remover. By operating the turning knob of the device, a uniform and controllable pulling force is exerted to the wires. In this way, the stent constricts evenly and can easily be removed without serious tissue damage. In addition, stent removal with this novel device shortens the operation time, thereby reducing the potential for unforeseen complications. On behalf of RWTH Aachen University, PROvendis offers access to rights for commercial use as well as the opportunity for further co-development.

New Method Boosts Centimeter-Level Navigation Accuracy

In principal all known conventional satellite navigation systems like GPS, Galileo, GLONASS, QZSS and BeiDou are enabling the determination of the position with accuracy on the centimeter-level by help of the carrier phase. However, the carrier signals, upon which the navigation signals are modulated, are typically impaired by various error sources, like ionospheric errors, tropospheric errors, instrumental errors and/or other error sources, leading to a defective determination of the position. The invention enables a precise and reliable relative positioning (relative kinematic positioning – RTK) with centimeter-level accuracy in urban environments as well as a precise attitude determination (heading estimation with 0.25°/m accuracy) with low-cost sensors. Wit the new method the above mentioned errors can be
eliminated reliably.

Hydrodabcyl: A New Hydrophilic Dark Quencher for FRET

In FRET (Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer) experiments, dark quenchers like Dabcyl are widely used to avoid background noise resulting from an overlap between quencher and reporter fluorescence spectra. They provide a predictable way of modulating the fluorescence emission intensity of fluorophores without occupying an emission bandwidth. Although Dabcyl is one of the most frequently used fluorescence quencher, the very poor solubility in aqueous solutions due to its hydrophobic properties limits its use in biological systems where the natural solvent is water. The present invention provides a new dark quencher called Hydrodabcyl, which represents the hydrophilic alternative to Dabcyl.

Antibodies against human CEACAM1 – Monoclonal antibody for the specific detection of the cancer-implicated adhesion-receptor-molecule CEACAM1

The present invention relates to an antibody that exhibit a high affinity and mono-specificity for the A1/B-domains of human CEACAM1. Thus, it is suitable to detect the membrane anchored, the cleaved soluble CEACAM1 and most of its derivatives. It is of use in several research applications, including ELISA, WB, IP, IHC, fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry.
