Since precision farming is a today’s requirement for economical agriculture it is required to map the harvested crops per field independent on moisture level within the crops.
We present a solution that is able to determine output rate with respect to mass and volume, while the machine is harvesting across the field in real time.
The whole unit is integrated (plug-in) within the crops flow inside the harvester. The apparatus guaranties a continuous recording of density, mass and volume and is suitable for a wide range of harvested crops. It will precisely work even if the machine moves over the rough field. To be sure what you have got on the end of the day it calibrates itself and comes with an automatic error control.

New Monoclonal Antibodies Target CCR5 Phosphorylation Sites

Scientists at the Georg-August-University Göttingen produced different monoclonal antibodies directed against phosphorylation sites of CCR5. These antibodies have been demonstrated to exclusively recognise CD195 phosphorylated at Ser 337 or Ser 349. Human CD195 is a member of the G protein coupled superfamily of receptors, which acts as a receptor for a member of chemokines including RANTES and also serves as a co-receptor for the entry of HIV into cells. It plays a key role in regulating the activation and migration of leukocytes. CD195 is expressed by a subset of T-lymphocytes and by monocytes. Using these antibodies e.g. in combination with our indicator cell line ligand induced phosphorylation or dephosphorylation of CCR5 can be directly measured without using more indirect indicators like Ca++ concentrations.
This principle can be extended to measure activation states of G protein coupled receptors or activity of GPCR kinases generally, e.g. when screening for new agonists, antagonists or GRK inhibitors.

Molecular Rectifiers: Harnessing Diamondoids for Innovation

A molecular rectifier comprised of a diamondoid molecule and an electron acceptor attached to the diamondoid molecule is now available. The electron acceptor is generally an electron accepting aromatic species covalently attached to the diamondoid. Hereby, the diamondoid molecule fulfills the role of an electron donor.

It has been discovered that rectification at the molecular level can be achieved by combining a diamondoid molecule with an electron acceptor ? most notably an aromatic one. Depending upon the particular combination of diamondoid molecule with electron acceptor, these molecules may act as rectifiers, resistors, p-n junctions, or a combination thereof.

Methods for detecting early stages of <i>Mycobacterium avium</i> subsp. <i>paratuberculosis</i> (MAP) infections – also suitable for calves

Two new methods allow the specific and sensitive detection of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) infections in normal blood samples, even in early stages of disease where animals exhibit clinical symptoms and in blood samples taken from calves.
Both methods involve flow cytometry procedures which are ba-sed on the specific measurement of IFN-? release or based on the determination of MAP-specific antibodies, respectively.

Novel Protein Aids Chemoenzymatic Production of L-Threo-Hydroxyaspartate

The invention at hand provides a novel protein for the chemoenzymatic and enantiomerically pure production of L-threo-hydroxyaspartate from L-aspartate.

The naturally occurring protein AsnO (asparagine oxygenase) is part of the CDA biosynthesis gene cluster in Streptomyces coelicor. AsnO is an Fe2+ and a-ketoglutarate-dependent hydroxylase. This hydroxylase acts as a building block for non-ribosomally produced CDA (?Calcium-dependent antibiotic?) in vivo. During the catalytic cycle, this class of enzymes couples the oxidative decomposition of a-ketoglutarate to succinate and CO2 with the hydroxylation of the substrate (L-asparagine).

In the wild type of AsnO, the side chain of the amino acid residue Asp-241 thereby binds to the NH2 group of the carboxamide group of L-Asn.
Surprisingly, it was found that directed mutagenesis of Asp-241 to Asn-241 (D241N) results in a binding site for the carboxyl group of an aspartate side chain. By means of this directed mutagenesis, the substrate specificity changes from asparagine to aspartate, and the mutated protein converts aspartate chemoenzymatically to L-threo-hydroxyaspartate in the presence of Fe2+ and a-ketoglutarate.

Thereby, AsnO D241N represents the mutant of the wild type AsnO according to the present invention.

The effect of the intravenously administered fibrinogen IIb/IIIa receptor antagonist Tirofiban as a thrombocyte aggregation inhibitor is known and well investigated. Now, for the first time, the dispersal of Tirofiban in the form of an aerosol has been achieved, which allows application of the produced aerosol via inhalation. This has the advantage that the active ingredients are reabsorbed very quickly after deposition and rapidly reach a therapeutically active drug level in the blood, which leads to life-saving thrombocyte aggregation inhibition. With this the possibility for acute and immediate treatment of diseases which are caused by or in conjunction with thrombus formation is finally available.

By means of a novel method, it was possible to create, by making full use of the “Bowing effect” ? against prevalent views ?, a ternary compound whose absorption edge can be freely adjusted over a wide range and which features a sharp absorption edge (e.g. ZnOxS(1-x) with c. 320 ? 470 nm 2,6-3,8eV, UV-B range).
To do so, the novel method uses production methods which have already been established (thin layer deposition), particularly advantageous sputter and chemical deposition techniques.

Novel Steroid Compounds Show Promise Against Malaria

A series of novel low molecular weight compounds with high activity against Plasmodium falciparum have been developed, synthesized and tested. The compounds are based on a substituted steroidal pharmacophor and are as antiinfective agents in their structure completely new.
The compounds are highly active against red blood cell stages of P. falciparum, also of chloroquine-resistant parasites. Present SAR data indicate that the hydrophobic steroid component and a hydroxyarylmethylamino group are essential for the antimalarial action of the compounds. The hydrophobic steroid part is likely to mediate membrane permeability.

A novel oxidic ternary co-catalyst containing molybdenum, which has been found to be highly active and stable in the overall photocatalytic splitting of water over gallium oxide. EO-Silicon – Inducing the electrooptic effect in silicon

Because of the symmetrical crystal structure there is no electro-optical effect in silicon. That means that in silicon the refractive index is not dependent on the applied electric field strength. The manufacturing of electro-optical components in silicon technology was therefore not possible in a cost-effective way.
A surprisingly simple and inexpensive method has now been found using chemical treatment of the silicon surface with bromine. Hereby silicon can be converted into an electro-optically active material. The induced electro-optical activity has a high thermal stability, which can even be increased by appropriate passivation layers.

AGIDC – Adaptive Grid Impedance Droop Control

Due to the increasing number of decentralized power feeder it becomes more and more difficult to keep up the stability of the power grid. For power feeder in low- and medium voltage power grid the ohmic part of the impedance gains more influence than in the transport grid. This means that the coupling of frequency and voltage to active and reactive power can be completely inverted compared to the common droop control. AGIDC solves this problem of droop control for decentralized power feeder in low- and medium voltage grids. AGIDC – with an impedance dependent static function – provides a droop control in a general form. The power feeding can be adapted to changing grid impedances and to other requirements from the transport grid.
