Innovative ATGL Inhibitors Target Diabetes II and Cachexia

The University offers a new technology addressing at least the two markets of tumour-induced cachexia and diabetes type II. Cancer has become a constantly increasing problem and thus about 1 % of all people in highly developed countries are hit by cachexia, leading to approximately 9 million patients for Europe, Japan and the US. Furthermore, diabetes type II is one of the major lifestyle diseases in the modern world.

Overlap Fix – High performance textile structures for composites through open reed weaving

Inventors of the RWTH Aachen University filed a patent relating the production of the multiaxial enforcement fabrics for textile composites with ORW (Open Reed Weave). To avoid load path interruptions in composites with textile enforcement, an overlapping of two yarn systems in the textile, by means of a special weaving pattern, leads to continuous load path in bias direction, reaching a “Triaxial” fabric, which is the main approach of the investigation. The Angle of additional reinforcement direction is adjustable and the calculated necessary overlapping is 16.28 mm length.
The system´s capability was verified by conducting three-point bending tests. These are performed varying the overlapping length, testing carbon and glass fibers and using reference samples as follows: [0/90°] fabrics and [0/90/45°] fabrics with continuous reinforcement. The results were successful in all cases. PROvendis offers licenses for interested enterprises on behalf of the University of Aachen.

Functional surface modification inspired by the mussel adhesive protein – the most stable adhesive in nature

Permanent and stable surface coatings are suitable to be achieved on medically relevant metals (e.g. titanium) and glass via trimeric catechol derivatives. Furthermore, various active agent molecules such as PEG, antibiotics, enzymes and other biomolecules may be coupled to natural molecules by means of simple chemical reactions (?click reactions?). The new tripodal ligands offer considerable advantages in comparison to the state of the art monovalent metal binders currently used.

Humanized Anti-CCR2 Antibody: A New Approach for MS and RA

Scientists of the University of Göttingen and of the University of Regensburg developed in collaboration a proprietary anti-CCR2 antibodies for the therapy of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and potentially Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA).The lead candidate Doc-2 has been humanized in collaboration with the MRC Technologies. It targets the CCR2 receptor and modulates the autoimmune process through depletion of CCR2+ monocytes.

MagnetWeft – Magnetic Weft Insertion in weaving machines

The object of the invention was hence to develop a weaving method of weft insertion that combines the advantages of the common methods whilst avoiding their deficits. This will be achieved with a magnetic projectile which is used for the guided transport of the yarn. The projectile is moved through the open shed by magnets, which are mounted on a belt. The belt is located outside of the shed. Multiple projectiles can be used simultaneously to ensure a high efficiency of the weft insertion.
The magnetic weft insertion represents an energy-efficient alternative to the standard weft insertion methods. The fact that production velocities of yarns with challenging processing characteristics can be similar to the ones of standard yarns is certainly an advantage. In magnetic weft insertion no source of compressed air is necessary, a reduction of energy consumption of about 60 % compared to a conventional air jet weaving machine is to be achieved.

Innovative Hexaorgano Guanidinium Salts for Battery Applications

The invention provides novel hexaorgano guanidinium or-ganocarbonates that can be used to produce other hexaorgano guanidinium salts through anion metathesis. The metathesis reaction according to the invention is highly efficient, as it enables quantitative production of the hexaorgano guanidinium salts. The method also avoids toxic byproducts. Both the hexaorgano guanidinium organocarbonates and hexaorgano guanidinium salts obtainable therefrom are halide-free ionic liquids and are thermally stable. They have many potential applications, for example in chemical syntheses, adsorption heat pumps, and elec-trolyte systems (e.g., batteries, photovoltaics).

Biotechnological Production of Biodegradable [S,S]-EDDS

The complexing agent ethylenediamine-disuccinate (EDDS) is an ethylenediamine-tetraacetate (EDTA) isomer. EDTA is widely used in paper, textile, and laundry industry but also as cosmetic, food, and medical additive. Due to its poor degradability, EDTA became an environmental hazard. EDDS has similar complex-forming properties as EDTA. In contrast to EDTA, the isomer [S,S]-EDDS is biode-gradable. Therefore, a chemical process to produce [S,S]-EDDS had already been established. Howev-er, the chemical synthesis is not only expensive but also complicated.
A biotechnological large scale production of [S,S]-EDDS was not possible until now, because already 2 μM zinc, a concentration occurring ubiquitously in standard media, inhibits the synthesis of [S,S]-EDDS. Here we present a process to synthesize [S,S]-EDDS biotechnologically using an optimized Amycolatopsis japonicum strain, that produces [S,S]-EDDS in the presence of zinc and in complex media (see Figure 1).

Detecting Microstimulated Particles for Medical Advances

The invention comprises a method for the improved localisation of
magnetised particles, like e.g. nano particles for medical.
This movement can be very sensitively detected by Radar to
identify the local distribution of the particles. This detection can be
accomplished with a very high resolution since the signals which
indicate the movement are detectable even below the noise floor.
This method has been developed for the early recognition of cancer.

Process to produce fiber composite components – Near-net-shape fabrics in preforms

For a cost-efficient mass production of fiber composite components, it is essential to optimize the preparation of the near-net-shape textile preforms. The actual process consists of the manufacturing of standard textile semi-finished materials and therefore results in a discontinuous and cost-extensive procedure. The several working-steps – cutting to form, handling and fixing of the parts – are time-consuming and generate a big loss of valuable material. The process object of this invention takes advantages on the use of near-net-shape fabrics. Here single textile reinforcement elements are joined in a continuous process to form the final preform. The process described increase significantly the productivity of the production process of preforms and constitutes therefore a basis for the serial production of fiber composite components. Furthermore this technology can be integrated in an existing chain process in order to upgrade it. On behalf of the RWTH Aachen, PROvendis offers the license to the technology and the possibility to establish a scientific cooperation for further development.

MINT: Precision Indoor Navigation With Minimal Infrastructure

Future and emerging indoor localization systems will rely on multiple different sensor systems to estimate the position of a device, such as accelerometers and radios available on smartphones. MINT uses a maximum of position-related Information embedded in a radio signal. Not only the direct signal path between an anchor (the infrastructure) and the mobile, but also deterministic reflections caused by building elements can be exploited. As a consequence, less infrastructure is needed: A single base station can already allow for centimeter-level localization. The uncertainty of the information contained in the reflected signals is learned automatically, which is needed for optimally processing the available information. With our real-time demonstration system of MINT, we consistently achieve accuracies better than 5cm, i.e. robust and accurate indoor localization is provided.

Innovative Vaccination Strategy Targets Myeloid Cell Aggregates

The present invention is based on the discovery of a so far unrecognized anatomic compartment within liver tissue that is formed by myeloid cells. These intrahepatic myeloid cell aggregates support local T cell expansion (iMATE) presumably by generating a cocoon-like structure that prevents hepatic regulatory cues to affect T cell proliferation within iMATEs.
This new observation can be exploited for the use of a vaccination strategy.
