OAB – Capsule – System for catheterless longterm urodynamic measurement

In patients with clinical symptoms of overactive bladder (OAB) standard urodynamic measurements often don’t yield pathological findings. This is caused by the short measuring time and also by psychosocial factors. Due to urethral and rectal measuring catheters, longterm urodynamic measurement is only possible under in-patient conditions and is therefore conducted rarely. However, an exact diagnosis is therapeutically crucial for patients suffering from OAB symptoms.

The core piece of this novel measuring system is a capsule containing a pressure sensor. This capsule is inserted into the patients’ bladder with a cystoscope. A blocking-mechanism prevents accidental loss of the capsule. In this way, intravesical pressure can be measured and stored for up to three days. Moreover, the system includes devices for registration of urge symptoms and voided urine. The measuring data of these three components are saved and synchronised. Commercial Opportunities: Worldwide, over 50 million people suffer from OAB and prevalence rises with age: OAB occurs in 12 – 22 % of people aged over 40 years and in more than 30 % of people aged over 75 years. The novel measuring system provides catheterless longterm urodynamic measurement integrated in the patients’ daily life. It enables exact diagnosis by determination of the temporal relation of intravesical pressure, urge symptoms and voided urine. Thus, optimal therapy, either conservative or surgical, can be initiated.
