In poinsettias grown using these deficit irrigation methods, leaf and bract drop were reduced by 50% and 90% respectively, compared to well-watered plants. Deficit irrigation is a technique that replaces only a percentage of the water that the plant loses. This stimulates the plant to produce hormones that can influence plant ‘robustness’ and improve tolerance to the stresses encountered during distribution and retailing. This technique not only reduces water use, but also reliance on plant growth regulators (PGRs) used in normal commercial production. These are labour intensive to apply and are reported to pose risks to the environment….
