Project AUTOASSERT: DFKI scientists develop software tool for the support of German electronics companies

Microelectronics is known as a key technology for many future developments, from autonomous cars to intelligent fridges. Small and medium-sized companies play an important role in the production process – and are now supported by the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI). The DFKI cooperates with COSEDA Technologies in the project AUTOASSERT, in which methods for the early verification of heterogeneous systems are developed in order to save time and costs and thus make German companies more competitive. The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) with roughly 830,000 Euros.

They are the ‘innovation drivers of the digitalization’ in Germany: In order to support the small and medium-sized companies of the electronics industry, the...

Genetic code for stem cell heart repair detected

A research team from Germany and Japan published in the LANCET journal EBioMedicine a new highly specific gene expression code controlling stem cell response for heart repair after infarction. Using advanced artificial intelligence algorithms they were able to detect specific variations in bone marrow stem cells by transcriptome deep sequencing of peripheral blood cells. In the studied patients with arteriosclerotic disease and heart failure they found advanced somatic mutations in blood associated with altered stem cell functions.

Arteriosclerosis, myocardial infarction and heart failure are a prime cause of disease and death worldwide. The genetic cause of disease and mechanisms of...

Spintronics: Faster data processing through ultrashort electric pulses

Physicists at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) and Lanzhou University in China developed a simple concept that could improve significantly magnetic-based data processing. Using ultrashort electric pulses in the terahertz range, data can be written, read and erased very quickly. This would make data processing faster, more compact and energy efficient. The researchers confirmed their theory by running complex simulations and the results were published in the journal “NPG Asia Materials”.

Magnetic data storage is indispensable for storing securely the huge amount of data generated every day, for instance through social networks. Once stored, the...

Multi-sensor system for the precise and efficient inspection of roads, railways and similar assets

Critical infrastructure such as transport networks are the lifelines of modern society. Extreme weather events may cause damage to railway tracks, roads, tunnels and bridges. The Fraunhofer Institute for Physical Measurement Techniques IPM has developed a novel 3D laser scanner that can be used to closely monitor transport infrastructure and plan maintenance work in a timely manner. The multispectral sensor system measures surface structures as well as the surface moisture on objects, all in a single inspection process.

Winter storms, heavy rainfall and floods can cause significant damage to railway networks and roads. Detecting cracks and other defects in road surfaces,...

Using digital twins for knowledge transfer

Gathering with customers and colleagues at meetings, events, workshops and seminars and collaborating with them in person has always been important – but it is not an option for the foreseeable future. The coronavirus pandemic is forcing us to find new ways of working together. The Fraunhofer IAO and the Fraunhofer IPA have already developed solutions to enable remote communication in tomorrow‘s work scenarios. Cooperation with their partners from industry and research is shifting to the digital Future Work Lab run by the two Stuttgart-based institutes – a solution that crosses boundaries and borders. This new form of connectivity is made possible by digital twins and virtual lab tours.

The concept of a digital twin is widely accepted in modern manufacturing and represents a key component of Industrie 4.0. It provides a digital model of the...

Drone flight using 5G: Initial experiments

Drones are used in an ever-increasing number of applications. To fulfil these tasks safely and reliably as they move through our airspace, drones need to be linked to high-performance cellular networks. The new mobile telecommunication generation 5G promises new possibilities with high data rates and low latency. Working with a 5G base station operated by Magenta in the Austrian community of Feichtendorf, a team of researchers from the University of Klagenfurt, Lakeside Labs GmbH, Magenta Telekom GmbH and Deutschen Telekom AG has recently conducted drone tests in a commercial 5G network. The scientific results were presented at the ACM MobiSys conference in mid-June.

“Communicating with drones via cellular networks poses new challenges”, according to Christian Raffelsberger, who works as a project manager for Lakeside Labs...

Im Focus: Electrons in the fast lane

Solar cells based on perovskite compounds could soon make electricity generation from sunlight even more efficient and cheaper. The laboratory efficiency of these perovskite solar cells already exceeds that of the well-known silicon solar cells. An international team led by Stefan Weber from the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (MPI-P) in Mainz has found microscopic structures in perovskite crystals that can guide the charge transport in the solar cell. Clever alignment of these "electron highways" could make perovskite solar cells even more powerful.

Solar cells convert sunlight into electricity. During this process, the electrons of the material inside the cell absorb the energy of the light....
