Biodiesel for automotion

The GAIKER Technological centre is designing a project, together with the Catalysis and Petrochemical Institute of the CSIC, The Bilbao School of Industrial Engineers and the University of Malaga, aimed at obtaining biofuels from a renewable source of energy. To this end, an attempt to develop a process of heterogeneous catalysis has been undertaken, with new catalysts that enable the obtaining of automotive biodiesel from recycled oils or from crops from energy crops.

The project for obtaining biodiesel has several advantages:

On the one hand, it has clear ecological consequences as this new process simplifies the washing stages that the current process uses, at the same time reducing the consumption of chemical and waste substances. Moreover, it is predicted that this new process for the production of biodiesel will be even more economical than the usual procedures, by means of increasing yields and by cost reductions in management.

The end target of this project, initiated in 2003 and with a planned duration of three years, is to obtain a biodiesel which complies with current legislation so it can be used as a fuel in vehicles.
