New approaches for the topical therapy of Malassezia – associated diseases

Lipophilic Malassezia yeasts are part of the resident flora of the skin, may however also cause diseases and cosmetic problems in humans and animals like e.g. seborrhoeic eczema, dandruff, head and neck dermatitis as variant of neurodermatitis or Malassezia dermatitis (in particular in cats and dogs). A significant role in all these diseases plays the increase in yeast numbers. The therapeutic aim must consequently be to reduce the cell number of Malassezia yeasts. A variety of antimicrobially active substances are currently utilized for this purpose, among others antimycotics of the group of azoles.
