New Therapy for Bisphosphonate-Associated Osteonecrosis

The administration of bisphosphonates is always necessary if a disease with high levels of bone resorption is given. Osteone-crosis of the jaws can arise as a contraindi-cation. This clinical picture is explained by a reduced bone turnover caused by bisphos-phonates. To date it has not been possible to develop specific therapies. The accom-plished symptomatic treatment is currently limited to antibiotic administration, mouth-washes and in the worst case operational removal of the necrotic tissue.

It was now possible to demonstrate that the administration of an agent, which is already available, can raise the viability of os-teoblasts significantly. So the agent enables to work against the osteonecrosis in an early state.
