Innovative Contrast Modification with Partial RF Spoiling in MR Imaging
Steady-state free precession (SSFP) sequences play a key role in rapid MR imaging and for parameter estimation. The criteria, under which useable dynamic equilibria emerge in SSFP sequences, allow to distinguish essentially three subtypes (with some examples of vendor dependent acronyms):
balanced SSFP (TrueFISP, CISS, b-FFE, FIESTA, …), unbalanced SSFP (FISP, PSIF, DESS, FFE, T2-FFE, GRASS, CE-FAST, …) and RF-spoiled unbalanced SSFP (FLASH, T1-FFE, SPGR, …) The parameter Phi, which usually serves as a means to completely destroy residual magnetization in unbalanced SSFP sequences (RF spoiling), is used to modulate signal levels based on T2 values. The invention is straightforward to implement in old and new systems – only Phi needs to be modified.
